Top 10 Brunch Spots in Gaslamp

Updated: Feb 8, 2019

At one point in our young adolescence we were taught that breakfast was in fact the most important meal.

This myth has stuck with us well into our adult years and has turned eating breakfast into part of our identity. I don't think I'm alone, when I contemplate answering, "Brunch" as a serious response to someone asking what I like to do on the weekends.

Here our the top 10 picks for the FINESD gaslamp brunch spots in San Diego.

1. Cafe 21

Located in the heart of Gaslamp (5th), Cafe 21 has a unique mediterranean inspired menu which makes for some really interesting breakfast combinations. They have a killer water bar infused with fresh fruits/botanicals, and a to-die-for Mimosa flight,

Patio Seating: Yes (Usually shaded).

Dog Friendly: Yes.

3. Lazy Hippo

Hidden away near the Chinese history museum, Lazy Hippo has a real corner neighborhood cafe feel. The vibes are a bit more mellow, but there is something charming about this quiet little find. They're best known for their cinnamon bun pancakes, and I have to say I agree. I get them every time.

Important Tidbits: Family-owned and conjoined with the "Whiskey House" next door means access to some really delicious on-tap San Diego beers.

What to Order: The Super Special

4. Richard Walker's Pancake House

5. Breakfast Republic

6. Old City Hall

True to its name, old city hall was in fact the home to San Diego city chambers at one point, as well as the city library and jail. This building was built in 1847, so if you don't make it on the gas lamp historical tour, getting drunk in this building is a close second. Did we mention they have $15 Bottomless Mimosas? As creepy as it sounds, be sure to check out the bathrooms.

What to Order: Waffle Flight

7. Werewolf

Filling, Hearty and real down home American type of feel. This is a place I would take my Dad and he would love it. You can spot tons of retro teenwolf decor. You can spot a lot of 80s references, but most imporantly you won't ever leave Werewolf feeling hungry. Patio isn't much to work with, but not a bad spot for a drink.

Other Info: I wouldn't bring any health nuts here!

What to Order: Pork Belly Benedict paired with Homer Cakes!

8. Half Door Brewing CO

Half Door Brewing Co.

If anything people dine here for just for the patio. Picture a cute old southern house with a patio upstairs and down.

Super close to Petco park so you won't be far if a baseball game is on your agenda. There are millions of delicious beers to choose from and a hearty irish pub-style menu

Important Tidbits: Patio seating is a must! I love taking out-of-town beer fans here for brunch.

9. Cafe 222

Off the beaten-path but open early, cafe 222 is good place for a small group to grab a delicious breakfast. They always have a line out the door, but be warned they only serve turkey bacon, and no alcohol! Nonetheless its a super cute spot with really delicious waffles. Their logo is my favorite, and for those that

What to Order: Peanut Butter Banana French Toast

10. The Morning After

Famous Pancake Flight

Fresh and new to downtown, The Morning After is just beginning to take shape. Their sweet and savory menu has a presentation that will make it not only to your mouth, but also your Instagram feed. Pancake flights and heavily garnished Bloody Mary's make for a wonderfully indulgent brunch. Patio is very large with heaters available.
